Read a core specification correctly
An aramid honeycomb core specification should identify the material grade, cell geometry, nominal density, sheet dimensions and thickness. Add the required tolerances, orientation and acceptance documentation. A description such as “aramid core, 10 mm” leaves too much unresolved for a reliable quotation.
| Parameter | What it describes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Material grade | Paper, resin and manufacturer designation | Establishes which technical data and qualification apply. |
| Cell size and shape | The geometry of the open cells | Affects face support, bonding details and formability. |
| Nominal density | Core mass per unit volume | Connects weight with grade-specific mechanical performance. |
| L × W × T | Ribbon direction, transverse direction and thickness | Prevents orientation or panel-size ambiguity. |
| Tolerances | Permitted variation in density and dimensions | Helps define acceptable material at receiving inspection. |
Density and weight
Core density refers to the cellular material, including its open volume. It is not the density of the aramid fiber itself. Higher-density versions often provide higher mechanical properties within a particular product family, but different families must be compared using their actual data.
As one published example, SCHÜTZ lists CORMASTER C1 densities from 24 to 144 kg/m³ and cell sizes from 3.2 to 9.6 mm. These ranges describe that manufacturer’s product family; they are not a universal range or an Aramcore stock list.
Estimate core areal mass
Core mass per area = density × thickness in metres.
Compare like-for-like test data
A useful comparison includes the test method, specimen thickness, conditioning, loading direction and whether the figures are typical values or guaranteed minima. Do not place an unqualified typical value beside another grade’s minimum and treat the difference as a design margin.
- Compression: distinguish bare core from stabilized specimens.
- Shear: request values for both L and W directions.
- Environment: identify dry, moisture-conditioned and elevated-temperature results where relevant.
- Bonding: validate the actual skin, adhesive and cure process.
A data sheet is a starting point. Design allowables and approval requirements belong to the application’s engineering and quality process.
Build a clear inquiry
State the intended application and attach a drawing when orientation, cut-outs or contours matter. Include quantity, delivery destination and required documentation. Identify any named material specification and revision rather than asking for an unspecified “aerospace grade.”
For a development program, separate trial-sheet needs from projected production demand. This helps make the initial technical discussion more precise without assuming that a candidate material has already been qualified.
